Two ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵ faculty members named NAI fellows
Two ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵ faculty members, recognized for their groundbreaking discoveries and innovations in chemical engineering to treat cancer and other challenging diseases and nanomaterials engineering for multifunctional manufacturing applications, are among the 2024 Fellows selected to the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Election to NAI Fellows is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.
Adaptive Lessons Funded by $383k NSF Grant: Principal Investigators, Artur Kaw and Rasim Guldiken
Autar Kaw and Rasim Guldiken, ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵCollege of Engineering Faculty, is revolutionizing education through adaptive learning technology. Supported by a $383,172 NSF grant, this project integrates tailored pre-class lessons into key engineering courses, aiming to improve student engagement, motivation, and success. The initiative also generates data-driven insights to refine learning strategies and promote best practices in STEM education.
¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵsets new record with $738 million in research funding
The milestone comes during USF’s first full fiscal year as a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and helps demonstrate its impact as one of the nation’s most research-intensive institutions. The new record brings the university closer to reaching its goal of securing $1 billion in annual research funding.
¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵMicrobiome Research Awards Granted to ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵFaculty: Daniel Yeh & Jody Harwood
¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵfaculty Daniel Yeh and Jody Harwood have been awarded the 2024-2025 ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵMicrobiome Research Award for developing sustainable wastewater systems for lunar habitats. Their innovative project combines environmental engineering and microbiology to tackle waste treatment in space, with potential applications for Earth.

Olukemi Akintewe, ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵEngineering Professor, Recognized as an AIMBE Emerging Leader
Olukemi Akintewe, an Associate Professor of Instruction in Medical Engineering at USF, has been named an inaugural AIMBE Emerging Leader. Recognized for her advocacy for women and underrepresented groups in STEM, she leads efforts to improve retention and support systems for these students. Dr. Akintewe will be honored at the AIMBE Annual Event in March 2025 in Washington, D.C., where she looks forward to collaborating with other leaders and mentors.

Faculty recognized included: Dr. Prasant Mohapatra, Dr. Sylvia Wilson Thomas, and Dr. Susan Bell, celebrating their achievements and potential to shape the future of science and engineering in Florida. Also, the 2024 Rising Star awards for Dr. Anna Pyayt.
CSE Student received The Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Award
CSE Professor Katkoori and his MS student, Raaga Sai Somesula, have received The Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation (OTD) Award for Raaga’s Master’s thesis work on a resource-efficient custom hardware for machine learning models.
The 2024 Transportation Achievement Awards were held on October 29. The transportation community joined together at the ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵ to celebrate excellence in transportation and planning. The CUTR event brought together industry leaders, innovators, and advocates to honor exceptional achievements that drive Florida’s transportation and infrastructure forward. Joe Lopano, CEO of Tampa International Airport (TPA), was inducted into the prestigious Florida Transportation Hall of Fame.

NSF Grant Awarded to Dr. Yavuz of USF’s Engineering Computer Science Department for SATUQ Project
Dr. Attila A. Yavuz of USF’s Computer Science and Engineering Department has been awarded a $364,117 NSF grant to advance cybersecurity for integrated satellite-terrestrial networks. His SATUQ project focuses on quantum-resistant cryptography and decentralized security to safeguard critical infrastructure and emerging tech like 6G.
Dr. Yucelen Recognized as Highly Ranked Scholar & Top Cited Scientist in 2024
Dr. Tansel Yucelen, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at (USF) was named a Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS, ranking third in Adaptive Control and 154th in Control Theory, and has also been recognized as one of the top 2% of the most cited scientists worldwide in Stanford/Elsevier's annual citation ranking.
