About Us

Message from the Chair

Dear Friends of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering,

das

On behalf of the students, staff, and faculty of IMSE, I offer you our warmest greetings. It is a pleasure to have your support for the Industrial and Management Systems Engineering Department at ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵwhere our commitment to student success and engagement with alumni and community continues to thrive through education, research, innovation, and service.

We are keenly focused on enhancing success of our students at all levels. We emphasize a comprehensive student mentoring approach through development of a holistic portfolio of accomplishments including leadership, community engagement, mental and physical health, language competency, global exposure, research and discovery, university/state/national scholarships, and life skills. Our BSIE curriculum has undergone major revisions to further refine our students' knowledge of decision-making using machine learning, statistics, and optimization.

Our Industry Consortium for Industrial and Management Systems Engineering (icIMSE) harnesses the power of partnership between the IMSE department and companies in the Tampa Bay Area. The icIMSE offers opportunities for experiential learning through problem solving in teams comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students. Our unique two-semester long BSIE senior design experience class emphasizes innovation and entrepreneurship. We offer a college wide opportunity for all students to participate in our ‘Interns Present’ competition, which fosters a spirit of practice learning through internships and co-ops. IMSE Board members conduct a yearly panel on ‘Transition to Profession’ aimed at offering all students at our college a smooth transition.

The IMSE graduate programs remain strong both in enrollment and quality. Our MSEM program continues to be ranked in top 40 among all online graduate engineering programs by U.S. News and World Report. Our Ph.D. graduates continue to receive highly competitive offers in both academia and industry. We have launched a new Master of Science in Data Intelligence (MSDI) program in fall 2023 with Computer Science department as our partner. This program offers specialization in ‘decision intelligence’ and ‘computational intelligence.’

USF's INFORMS student chapter has been selected from all chapters worldwide 10 times in the last 12 years to receive the Summa-Cum-Laude annual chapter award from INFORMS. Our student chapter of IISE also continues to thrive with multiple years of ‘GOLD’ designation in-a-row by the IISE.

Finally, like all other major academic institutions, our ability to continually improve opportunities for success of our students depends greatly on receiving generous support of your financial and other resources. Please click to donate.

Most sincerely,

Tapas K. Das
