Stavros Center Programs, Workshops and Seminars

The Stavros Center hosts numerous *FREE* professional development opportunities throughout the year for K-12 educators to assist them with implementing economic education and financial literacy curriculum into their classrooms. 

We look forward to having you join us for exciting professional development activities. Below you will find a list of current programs and workshops for educators. For more information about upcoming workshops and seminars, please contact us.

Every workshop has a Registration Survey under the information. One week before the workshop you have registered for, you will receive a confirmation email that includes details and parking information. Additionally, a reminder is sent the day before. This workshop will provide you with ready to use lessons meeting Florida ELA and social studies standards for K-5.

How will you answer when students ask you: 鈥淲hat is an election?鈥  鈥淗ow do we know if it fair?鈥  鈥淲hat makes a good leader?鈥

Voting is both a right and a privilege. At the core of every democracy lies citizen engagement, starting with our youngest learners. Through discussions on fairness, representation, and community needs, children develop a sense of responsibility. Teaching about elections nurtures critical thinking and emotional well-being, empowering children to become active citizens. Unity is vital in democracy, regardless of election outcomes. Engaging in discussions builds emotional resilience, teaching children to manage stress and disagree respectfully. Our workshop emphasizes respect, collaboration, and understanding.

This hands-on session is designed to equip Upper Elementary, Middle and High School teachers with the tools and techniques to analyze and interpret various media forms and foster critical thinking and media literacy in the classroom. Participants will explore how commercials, print ads, and speeches are used to influence the voter. Teachers will become familiar withprimarysourcedocuments related to prior American elections. Join us for an interactive experience that will transform the way you teachprimarysourcesand inspire your students to see media through a critical lens.

Tuesday, October 29- Music Industry; Funding the Future

 Join us for an engaging and informative evening focused on financial literacy through the lens of the music industry. The night starts with a live performance by Gooding, a dynamic singer/musician blending music with financial lessons that will inspire students and educators alike. Following the performance, teachers will receive resources designed to explore how the economics of music have evolved over time, including the impact of AI on music creation, changes in industry revenue streams, and the complexities of ticket sales.

From understanding artist royalties to navigating IP. We鈥檒l break down new technologies shaping the industry and the resulting economic impact. This workshop provides valuable insights for educators seeking to integrate real-world financial literacy into their classrooms. Whether you're teaching about supply and demand or preparing students for a future in creative industries, this session will equip you with the tools and knowledge to bring financial literacy to life for your students.

Thursday, November 7- Assembly Line

Tuesday, November 12- Math Adventures in Financial Literacy

Thursday, November 14- Ecophobia (Sustainability)

Ecophobia, the distress and concern individuals feel regarding environmental problems, permeates our society, manifesting as feelings of helplessness and guilt. A recent study starkly reveals its impact, with 82% of children expressing fear, sadness, and anger when confronted with environmental issues.

Traditional approaches to communicating environmental threats to children often exacerbate ecophobia, leaving them feeling overwhelmed and powerless. However, a promising alternative lies in fostering environmental empathy and literacy through narrative children鈥檚 books and engaging activities. By instilling a love for and empathy towards all living beings in our environment, we equip children with the tools to become stewards of our planet. You will leave this workshop with standards aligned lessons to reduce ecophobia for use in ELA, science and social studies classrooms.

Understanding children's perspectives on these issues is paramount. Only by empowering them with the knowledge and compassion necessary to confront environmental challenges can we cultivate a generation of sustainability superheroes ready to conquer ecophobia and safeguard our planet's future.

This exciting series will dive specifically into Software Suites that deal with artificial intelligence. Specific suites will be announced in your confirmation email one week before the workshop.

Virtual Series 3- Elementary Economics, Wednesdays- November 6,13,20 at 4:00pm-5:00pm:

Using Children鈥檚 Picture Books to Teach Elementary Economics and Financial Literacy. This engaging series will explore innovative ways to teach elementary school social studies through captivating children's picture books! We will explore the functions of money, the differences between needs and wants, goods and services, and the importance of making choices. Additionally, students are introduced to concepts related to personal finance, such as saving, borrowing, and the role of banks.
