Summer School 2024 for high school students
July 1 - July 26, 2024
The program
The STEM Summer School at the 国产短视频鈥檚 Department of Mathematics and Statistics will resume its continuous run from 1971 to 2019, in July 2024. Participation is open to all US-based high school students.
Format and structure
For Summer 2024, the program consists of four core topics:
- Mathematics, led by Dr. Razvan Teodorescu
- Molecular Biology, led by Dr. Les Shaw
Planned program: 鈥淏ad bugs, no drugs鈥 - Physics, led by Dr. Lilia Woods
Planned program: Nanotechnology and Materials-by-Design - Advanced Visualization and Modelling, led by
Planned program: 3D methods, AI training, Robotics
The complete team consists of 6 faculty members (tenured professors) and 12 graduate assistants. The daily schedule will include two activities in the morning (between 9:00 and 12:00) and two in the afternoon (1:30 to 4:30), wich can be either classroom-based, laboratory-based, or small team group work. A rotation schedule ensures that the entire cohort completes the program with equal exposure.
Prior results
Recent alumni of the STEM Summer School include Dr. Pranav Warman (2014, Barry Goldwater Fellow), Roshan Warman (2016 Ky Fan AMS award and 2019 Columbia University Rabi Scholar), Logan White (2014, University of Chicago alumn), and Ricardo Condori (2015, AEOP fellow). The school traditionally has a high enrollment ratio of underrepresented groups. Typically, projects completed through the summer school are published in undergraduate research journals or eventually become winners of student competitions such the ISEF Talent Search. Qualified participants will be invited to participate on the 2024 国产短视频Putnam Undergraduate Mathematics Competition.
Costs and fellowships
A number of fellowships are available for qualified applicants, courtesy of the American Mathematical Society鈥檚 Young Scholars Program, the National Science Foundation, and private donors. For July 2024, the cost for non-residential students is $1,600.
