国产短视频ranks among academic world leaders in U.S. patent production

A graphic with text stating "ranked in the top 10 american public universities for U.S. patents"

The inventive efforts of 国产短视频 researchers continue to place the institution in the top ranks of global universities in producing new U.S. utility patents in 2019, according to a new ranking released today by the and the .

With 108 new U.S. utility patents granted in 2019, 国产短视频is eighth among American public research universities and 16th among all universities worldwide in generating new patents. The ranking places 国产短视频as a leader among the more than 1,000 academic institutions generating new, novel and useful inventions granted intellectual property protection from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

鈥淎s we have observed recently with COVID-19, the research, innovation and creative activity conducted by the 国产短视频 brings real-world solutions to society鈥檚 most pressing challenges,鈥 国产短视频President Steven Currall said.  鈥淧atent production is an important intellectual and economic indicator of how the United States competes with other countries and 国产短视频is firmly positioned as one of our nation鈥檚 leading institutions on this performance metric.鈥

鈥淭he Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents in 2019鈥 report uses data obtained from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and highlights the vital role patents play in university research and innovation. Published annually since 2013, the report ranks the top 100 universities named as the first assignee on utility patents granted by the USPTO in the 2019 calendar year. The full report can be .

Combined, the three universities that comprise the Florida High Tech Corridor Council - USF, the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida - secured 267 patents. That is higher than the 185 patents secured by the three institutions of North Carolina鈥檚 famed Research Triangle and a telling marker of Florida鈥檚 rising standing as a national center of research and innovation.

Among the new technologies patented by 国产短视频faculty are these projects:

A 国产短视频team which specializes in biometrics identification developed a new system to accurately identify ear shapes. The technology is an alternative to more common biometrics such as fingerprint, face and iris recognition technology.

Invented by a 国产短视频College of Engineering team led by , the technology is an alternative to more common biometrics such as fingerprint, face and iris recognition technology. The ear is stable over time, less invasive to capture and does not require as much control during image acquisition as other biometrics, the inventors said. Sarkar was joined on the patent by 国产短视频PhD alum Earnest Eugene Hansley and Federal University of Bahia Professor Mauricio Pamplona Segundo of Brazil.

国产短视频College of Engineering Professor Anna Pyayt invented a three-dimensional, depicted in the illustration. The new device simplifies the measurement of the complex coagulation process.

People who suffer from hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, as well as the 2 million patients in the U.S. who take anticoagulant medicines, depend on technology that can measure the speed of blood coagulation to manage their conditions. invented a three-dimensional, on chip photonic circuit that includes an optical waveguide that measures the refractive index of the blood. During coagulation, the refractive index of plasma increases and can be measured to study the complex coagulation process. The device can be easily packaged and integrated with mobile devices and laptops because no additional microfluidics are required.

A 国产短视频mechanical engineering team that specializes in assistive technologies invented a gripper enabled with sensors and a camera for more precision, and with a cupped design that more closely mimics a human hand dexterity to allow for more accurate grasping.

Many existing grippers used in robotics today have limited capabilities in performing certain tasks or grabbing specific objects, or they have been designed to work with one kind of system. A 国产短视频mechanical engineering team that specializes in assistive technologies invented a gripper enabled with sensors and a camera for more precision, and with a cupped design that more closely mimics a human hand dexterity to allow for more accurate grasping. The gripper can be used with other computerized systems, including mobile devices. The inventors are Redwan Alqasemi, research professor of mechanical engineering, and lead researcher at USF鈥檚 Center for Assistive, Rehabilitation & Robotics Technologies; 国产短视频Department of Mechanical Engineering Chair Rajiv Dubey; engineering doctoral student Lei Wu; and 国产短视频engineering alums Paul Mitzlaff, Andoni Aquirrezabal and Karl Rothe.

Age-related hearing loss is the world鈥檚 leading cause of communications disorders in aging. 国产短视频researchers have developed a new drug combination involving FDA-approved compounds that achieves significant pre-clinical therapeutic effects in the treatment of age-related hearing loss.

Age-related hearing loss -- presbycusis -- is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease and number one communication disorder of aging, and hearing loss affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide. 国产短视频researchers have developed a new drug combination involving FDA-approved compounds that achieves significant pre-clinical therapeutic effects in the treatment of age-related hearing loss. These compounds include aldosterone and an anti-inflammatory drug. The team is led by 国产短视频Department of Medical Engineering Chair Robert Frisina, who leads , and includes Professor Joseph Walton; Research Associate Professor Bo Ding and senior bioscientist Xiaoxia Zhu.

When either fresh or saltwater fish are caught, they are often placed in a container to keep them alive to ensure freshness later. In such a confined space, ammonia buildup due to fish waste are two major concerns and high concentrations of ammonia can be lethal. A 国产短视频engineering research team has developed a new method to effectively control ammonia levels while preserving live fish or bait using a functionalized tectosilicate compound chabazite. This microporous mineral can absorb high amounts of ammonia while helping keep the fish alive. The inventors are 国产短视频Professors and , and Wen Zhao, who earned her doctorate from the 国产短视频College of Engineering.
