Concern for Antarctic Krill

Antarctic krill -- filter feeders that look like shrimp and eat phytoplankton -- are the meal of choice for whales, seals, penguins, and fish in the Southern Ocean. They are considered one of the most abundant, and therefore the most successful, animals on the planet. Their ancestors roamed the seas more than 23 million years ago. But will this epic accomplishment fade as the climate warms? Over the past 90 years historical hotspots for krill, who like it cold, have shifted southward in response to the warming water. Juvenile abundance has also declined since the 1970s. A new publication, and a featured article in , provides further evidence of cause for concern, and helps tease out some of the effects of a warming climate.

A team led by Rutgers University that includes two scientists from the 国产短视频College of Marine Science, professor Brad Seibel and researcher Tracy Shaw, performed the first experiments to track the effects of a climate change double whammy on adult krill: warming temperature and more acidic water (called ocean acidification). They found the following:

  • Shorter-term effects (days to weeks) were primarily due to increased acidity
  • Krill compensated for increased acidity within hours to days
  • Longer-term, negative impacts on growth and survival were driven more by higher temperature than by acidity

鈥淐limate change does not just mean warmer waters,鈥 said Shaw.  鈥淥ther aspects of the environment change, too.  The strength of this study is that we looked at the combined effects of two environmental variables.鈥

鈥淎ntarctic krill have a flexible diet and can survive hundreds of days without eating,鈥 she added. 鈥淥ne thing they can鈥檛 tolerate is getting too warm.鈥  

This raises concerns about how they will fare in future climate scenarios.  Oh, and there鈥檚 yet another concern for marine animals, said Seibel, one that wasn鈥檛 addressed in this study.

鈥淚t鈥檚 also likely that the ocean will see lower oxygen levels, so we are taking a look at the impact of that scenario on the metabolism of marine animals, too,鈥 he said.
