Educational Psychology faculty member receives Fulbright Award to Hungary
TAMPA, Fla. (May 29, 2019) — ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵ (USF) Associate Professor Darlene DeMarie, PhD, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award to Budapest, Hungary for the Fall 2019 semester.
Established in 1946, the is the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program. Recipients of the prestigious Fulbright Award earn the opportunity to teach and conduct research abroad, with the goal of cultivating mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries. Upon returning, faculty integrate their experiences into their teaching and establish key partnerships in the country for their research.
While in Hungary, Dr. DeMarie will teach psychology and early childhood education courses at Eötvös Loránd University. She will also lead a group of faculty and students at the university to translate a publication of the American Psychological Association (APA), the The publication, originally co-authored by DeMarie in 2015 with APA’s Coalition for Psychology in Schools and Education, has been translated in 12 languages previously, and will be utilized by educators in the country once the latest translation to Hungarian is complete.
Dr. DeMarie’s research investigates children’s memory development, and she uses photography with preschool and elementary school children as a way to explore school experiences through children’s own eyes. She currently serves on the Board of East Tampa Academy and has worked with children to create books of their photographs to show others their school experiences.
In addition to her work in the College of Education, Dr. DeMarie serves as USF’s Fulbright Faculty Advisor, assisting other faculty members with the competitive application process. Under Dr. DeMarie’s leadership, ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵhas experienced unprecedented success with the Fulbright Program. According to an annual list published by the , ¹ú²ú¶ÌÊÓƵwas the no. 1 top producing research university in the nation for faculty Fulbright U.S. Scholars in 2016 and 2018.
