Biography

Michelle Hughes Miller, PhD, is Professor in the 国产短视频Department of Women鈥檚, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. As a feminist criminologist with a PhD in Sociology (Nebraska, 1997), she teaches classes on Feminist Pedagogy and Feminist Research Methods, and substantive seminars and undergraduate courses on Politics of Motherhood, Women and Social Justice, and Gender, Crime & Justice.

In 2017, Dr. Hughes Miller achieved recognition for her work in diversity in STEM, analyzing the problem of campus violence, and expanding the field of motherhood studies when she received a 国产短视频Faculty Outstanding Research Achievement Award.

She has published three well-regarded co-edited books: Bad Mothers: Representations, Regulations and Resistance (Demeter Press, 2017), Addressing Violence Against Women on College Campuses (Temple University Press, 2017), and Alliances for Advancing Academic Women: Guidelines for Collaborating in STEM (Sense Publishers, 2014). Currently, she is working with Dr. Olga Marques to publish an edited book for Demeter Press on Incarcerated (M)others

She has substantial STEM-related funded research activity with two interdisciplinary multi-year grants totaling more than $500,000. This includes a 2017 collaborative grant: 鈥淓xploring the Effects of Academic Climate and Social Networks on the Persistence of Sexual and Gender Minority STEM Undergraduates.鈥

In addition, she has published over multiple articles and book chapters on constructions of motherhood in law and policy, systemic responses to violence against women, and strategies to expand diversity in STEM disciplines.
